Welcome to XI’S WORDS.  In this episode, we’ll take a look at some inspiring words from President Xi Jinping during his first overseas state tour of 2019.

On March 21st,  President Xi  left Beijing for a 6-day series of state visits to Italy, Monaco, and France. 

2019年3月21日，中国国家主席习近平离开北京赴意大利、摩纳哥和法国进行为期六天的国事访问。

On his first stop, in Italy, President Xi received a curious question from Roberto Fico, the Italian lower house speaker - “How did you feel when you were elected Chinese President?”

在访问首站意大利，习主席收到了来自意大利众议院议长罗伯托•菲科的一个充满好奇的问题，“您在当选为中国国家主席时有何感想？”

President Xi replied, it’s a great responsibility and an arduous task to be Chinese President.

习主席回复说，（中国）这么大一个国家，责任非常重、工作非常艰巨。

“Selfless shall I be for the good of my people. I would like to be selfless and I am devoted to serving the Chinese people and the country’s development.”

“我将无我，不负人民。我愿意做到一个‘无我’的状态，为中国的发展奉献自己。”

The idea of selflessness, mentioned by President Xi, showed his deep understanding of ancient Chinese philosophy. According to Taoist Classics, a person should ideally change themselves in order to become a positive example for others.

习主席提到的“无我”的概念体现了他对中国古典哲学的深刻理解。中国道家经典认为圣人应当改变自身，从而为他人作出表率。

According to the Tao Te Ching, one achieves self-fulfillment by selflessly aiding others.

《道德经》也提到道家所提倡的生活是人能够通过“无我”地使他人受益而最终“实现自我”。

President Xi told Mr Fico, an athlete can greatly improve his performance through rigorous training. By this same idea, President Xi believes he can make the country a better place with the continued support of China’s population.

正如习主席向菲科先生所说，一个运动员经过训练可以显著地提高成绩。同理，习主席相信有全中国人民的支持，我们能把国家建设好。
