Daniel: Hey, Joe.

小周：嗨，大牛，咋的了？

Daniel: Not much. We haven’t seen you in ages. What have you been up to?

小周：也没忙啥，就是我要参加一个权游聚会了，我要准备一个披风还有一把剑，做全套的戏服。

Joe: Not much. I’m actually going to this Game of Thrones cosplay party. I’m gonna get myself a cape, a fake sword ... the whole costume.

大牛：你要扮雪诺啊？

Daniel: So are you going as Jon Snow?

小周：这多明显啊，你以为我留长发是为的啥？我和雪诺看上去像不像兄弟俩？你知道吗，放在中国，我跟雪诺这样的男子都叫“七尺男儿”。字面上讲就是“身长七尺的男人”，一尺大概33.33厘米。

Joe: Obviously. Why do you think I grew out my hair. We're basically brothers. Hey you know what? In China, guys like us would be called “qī chǐ nán ér”. It literally means “seven-chǐ-tall man”. One “chǐ” is roughly equal to 33.33 centimeters.

大牛：那也就是说，你……身高两米三？这不太对吧？

Daniel: So that means you would be ... 2.3 meters tall ... I’m not sure about that.

小周：这样，咱们一起去探究一下“尺”有多长吧。

Joe: I’ll tell you what, let’s actually go and find out how long a “chǐ” is.

两人来到了歪果仁购物的网红地点：秀水街

小周：我们现在来到了秀水街。

Joe: We’re here at the Silk Street Market.

大牛：我们来这里干啥？

Daniel: Why are we in a market?

小周：这里是外国人买衣服的好地方。所有人都说英语，而且这里会有裁缝量体裁衣。

Joe: Well it’s a great place for foreigners to buy clothes. Everyone speaks English. And there might be a tailor here.

小周：咱们可以去店里量一量。

Joe: We can go get measured in there.

大牛：行，走！你去跟人家说？

Daniel: OK. Let’s go! You're gonna talk to the guy?

小周：咱俩猜拳吧！石头，剪子，布！

Joe: Rock, paper scissors before it. Rock, paper, scissors!

大牛：哎呀！

小周：行啦，走吧。

Joe: Come on. Let’s go.

店长：你们可以叫我张裁缝师。

Zhang: You can call me Zhang Tailor.

大牛：我们想量量尺寸，试试西装。

Daniel: We’re looking to get measured for some suits.

大牛：其实我们有个问题想请教。

Daniel: So we have a question.

店长：你说。

Zhang: Yes?

大牛：到底多高才算“七尺男儿”？

Daniel: How tall is “qī chǐ nán ér”?

店长：这是中国用的刻度，对于厘米来说，33cm是一尺，“七尺男儿”中的一尺乘以七倍，得两米左右，这个成语现在变了，更多是指成长为一个男人，可以是指结婚、生子、成家、立业等等。

Zhang: Like this is Chinese. And for centimeter, 33 cm is for 1 chǐ. “qī chǐ nán ér” is about (1 chǐ) times seven. Almost like 2 meters. Now it’s different. It means to become a man. You will maybe get married, have baby, and you have everything in a family. You have a house, have a life like this.

小周：真有意思。

Joe: OK. That’s interesting.

小周：我觉得有必要找专家咨询下。

Joe: I think we need a scientific opinion.

大牛：咨询专家……我知道有个好地方！

Daniel: Scientific opinion ... I know just a place!

小周：真的吗？

Joe: Really?

大牛：我们现在来到了中国计量科学研究院。

Daniel: Here we are at the China’s National Institute of Metrology.

小周：大牛，咱们来这里干啥？

Joe: Dan, what are we doing here?

大牛：给你个惊喜！我请到了两位神秘嘉宾。

Daniel: Well, that’s a surprise. I have two mystery guests!

小周：真的吗？

Joe: Oh really?

大牛：真哒！

Daniel: Yeah.

Joe: Come on, tell me who the mystery guest is.

Daniel: I can’t. It would not be a mystery, would it?

大牛：我们对中国的计量单位很感兴趣，我们也想知道“七尺男儿”的含义。

Daniel: We are very interested in Chinese units of measurement. We want to know the meaning of “qī chǐ nán ér”.

小周：听闻您是计量领域的专家，希望您能跟我们分享一下智慧。

Joe: And we heard you are a professional in the units of measurement, so we hope that you can share your wisdom with us.

高老师：想知道答案，得先了解下中国的线条刻度知识。

Gao: If you want to learn this question, you must learn about the Chinese line scale.

高老师：你们看，这就是我们中国最早的一把高精度的尺子，“尺之原器”。1909年的时候定制的一把长度标准，把它打开给你们看一下，特别珍贵，它两条刻线之间的距离是一尺长，长度是32厘米，是咱们中国的这个尺发展，至于你们“七尺男儿”有多高，请我们李老师出来给你们解答。

Gao: You see, this is the first High-precision ruler, “The Chinese Prototype of the chǐ”. It was made in the year of 1909. Let me show you. It’s very precious. The distance between the two lines is one “chǐ”, which is 32cm then. It represents the development of Chinese standard of length. As for the length “chǐ”, I think Dr Li is the one you can get the answer from.

李老师：其实说尺子，商代，战国时期前应该是15.8-16厘米，到汉朝，尺子长度一般都是23.1厘米，因此呢，在各朝各代的尺子长度是不一样的，所谓的“七尺男儿”呢，也得看是哪个朝代的男儿，比如三国曹操，七尺男儿应该是一米七左右。

Li: Speaking of rulers, it should be 15.8-16cm in Shang Dynasty and Warring States. In Han Dynasty, one “chǐ” was roughly equal to 23.1cm. So we can see that the length of one “chǐ” in different dynasties is variable. So it depends on which dynasty you are referring to. Take Cao Cao in The Three Kingdoms period as an example, “qī chǐ nán ér” would be about 1.7m.

大牛：所以从您的专业角度看，我们俩谁更像“七尺男儿”？

Daniel: So in your professional opinion, which one of us is more of a “qī chǐ nán ér”?

李老师：我认为，你们俩都可以算“七尺男儿”。

Li: In my opinion, you are both “qī chǐ nán ér”.

小周：太棒了！

Joe: Awesome, cool!
